Why Get Baptized?

Matthew, an eyewitness to the life of Jesus, recorded some of the last words Jesus spoke before he returned to heaven. He told his closest followers to spread the word about him to people everywhere, to baptize them, and to teach them how to follow him. When people came to believe in him, they should be baptized in God's name. So to understand baptism, we first ask what it means.

Here are three things we believe about baptism:

Baptism is a public declaration of a new association. When we are baptized, we associate with the message and the person of Jesus Christ. It is a personal declaration of a decision someone has made to follow Jesus. Baptism is not a condition of salvation; it is evidence of salvation. We believe a person is saved and then baptized. Baptism does not make our salvation official.

What this looks like in practice

In a preschool room, teachers plan around the day, not the clock. Mornings hold circle time, free play, art, books, and time outside. Children wash hands before snack and help tidy what they used. Teachers sit at eye level, ask open questions, and name what they see. Families get notes or photos about their child's day, so you know what happened without asking.

Get involved one step at a time. Register for a Sunday gathering, join a group, or serve on a team. Many parents start by volunteering in the same room their child attends. Ask the church which steps fit your family right now.

Three women walk toward the camera on a paved path lined with grass and trees, with other people and parked cars visible in the background.
